Language training

Language training at the University of Defence (UoD) is conducted by the Language Training Centre (LTC) .

The students have to meet the requirements of both the University (credits, marked credits, exams) and the Ministry of Defence (NATO STANAG 6001 – for more details see  http://www.ujp-acr.cz/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=157&Itemid=8&lang=cs ).

Language training is focused on practical communication and development of all basic language skills – speaking, listening, reading and writing. It covers not only teaching General Languages, but also Professional and Academic Languages with the emphasis on English.

Teaching General Languages gears the students towards the achievement of at least B1-B2 levels according to CEFR in English and A2 in the second foreign language.

The aim of teaching Professional English is to develop students’ abilities to actively communicate in their professional field.   In the second foreign language the students have to learn at least basics of professional language.

Teaching Academic Languages is conducted mostly in Masters’ and Ph.D. study programmes focusing on presentation skills, leading discussion, academic writing, reading strategies, etc.

Language training differs at individual faculties in terms of number of lessons and languages offered. Nevertheless, English language is given the highest priority in all study programmes.

Language training takes place in language classrooms and in accordance with the latest trends in learning theory and foreign language teaching.  Information and communication technologies offer a broad range of teaching methods. Lots of teaching materials at the study portal of the University of Defence are accessible from any computer connected to the Internet.

As far as language support for incoming Erasmus students and staff is concerned, it is being provided by the Language Training Centre. The incoming Erasmus participants are welcome to attend language courses not only in English, but also in other languages.  Upon their arrival, they are familiarized with the system of language training at the University of Defence.
