Prof. RNDr. Vanda Boštíková, Ph.D.

Curriculum vitae  

Born in Prague on 9 June 1964, Vanda Boštíková graduated from the Prague-located Faculty of Science, Charles University, in 1988. She focused her doctoral thesis on developmental immunotoxicology and elaborated the paper at the Experimental Medicine Institute belonging under then Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, where she worked after the studies till 1992. In the following years, she engaged in virology at the Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion in prof. Vladimír Vonka’s team. The team very closely cooperated with their partners in Heidelberg, Germany, under the leadership of prof. Harald zur Hausen, who later became Nobel Prize holder. The crucial output from the research is the today-commonly available vaccine against cervical cancer saving literally millions of lives all around the world.

Her path led her from Prague to the United States of America where she worked fifteen years for, first, Iowa State University, Iowa City, Iowa, then for private Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. Finally, she won the competition for a job for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) federal agency. There, she contributed to a number of studies focused on dangerous virus infections bearing the responsibility for the transfers of virus infection molecular biologic detection methods to Latin America and to Asia.

She has joined her academic qualification improvement with the Military Faculty of Medicine of the University of defence since 2009 (associate professor in 2012, full professor in 2018). She has been tutoring doctoral degree students in Medical Microbiology field of study. The Medical Microbiology field has been granted the right of holding associate/full professor proceedings for ten-year period by the National Accreditation Bureau. She chairs its Subject Area Board. Beside teaching for University of Defence, she lectures both in Czech and English, for the civilian Medical Faculty of Charles University in Hradec Kralove and for University of Pardubice, and she closely collaborate with the Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University, in Prague. In her academic and teaching activities, she uses the outputs from the still active, from both sides, collaboration with CDC, Emory University and Kennesaw State University (Atlanta, Georgia, USA). In the period 2018 – 2021, she was appointed the vice-dean for external relations of the Hradec-based Faculty.

She is the author or a co-author of more than 50 expert publications indexed in Web of Science data base, of 175 articles in Scopus data base and of several dozens of peer-reviewed articles for Czech expert journals. She has contributed with keynote lectures to a number of symposia, conferences or round debate tables both abroad and Czech. She has contributed to several expert monographs published abroad as the original author of some chapters. She was a member of the team of authors of the two-volume monograph/textbook for medical faculties in dermato-venerology that won Josef Hlavka Award for scientific literature. She recently published a book focused on new and reoccurring virus infectious diseases accentuating their occurrence in Europe and the Czech Republic. She is the deputy chief editor of university-published Military Medical Science Letters journal.
